Parallels indicates the following new and key features of version 17: Session Pre-Launch: Uses machine learning to map users’ computing habits, applications used and login time, enabling it to pre-launch everything for increased productivity. Google Authenticator: This will provide an additional layer of security using a time-based one-time password. Granular Permissions for Administrators: IT administrators can configure specific permissions to different administrators and delegate control of Parallels RAS objects, including RAS infrastructure components, Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH), and session management. Windows Server 2019 Support: This allows Parallels RAS to leverage the advanced features of the latest version of Microsoft RDS and Hyper-V. Web-based Helpdesk Console: This gives administrators and delegated admins access to manage RDSH sessions, VDI and applications. REST API: This new API means easier integration with scheduling and workflow applications, alongside the existing PowerShell API, which enables larger enterprises, independent software vendors (ISVs) and SPs to quickly integrate Parallels RAS into their ecosystem.   10. The public cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) market has been growing rapidly over the last few years with no end in sight. The S3 API is more or less seen as the de facto standard for cloud storage and the common language for integrating on-premises and cloud storage. Cloudian is working with VMware to capitalize on these two phenomena with its new object cloud storage solution. The new solution allows customers to start off where they need and grow over time. The solution has multi-tenant resource pooling, integrated management tools such as billing and quality of service controls, data encryption and Write Once, Read Many (WORM) for security and compliance, and geo-distribution for easily managing storage across multiple data centers.   12. DataDirect Networks (DDN) EXA5 is the next generation of their parallel file system solution, EXAScaler. According to the company, EXA5 will come in a variety of options, including both on-premise or through either Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud. Five models have been revealed so far, ranging from HDD based to full flash with hybrid configurations in between. All models will run DDN’s Lustre 2.12. EXA5 introduces several new data management and integrity file system features. Stratagem is a data orchestration engine that gives users data residency controls using policy-based placement. Hot Pools intelligently moves data between high-performance flash and large capacity disk. EXA5 will also sport a native T10DIF implementation for end-to-end data protection as well as KMIP and FIPS. With this next generation of platforms, DDN is also expanding the integration with their DDN Insight tool that provides real-time visibility into software and appliances. The first announcement from Dell at the conference was that one of their divisions, Dell EMC, has added Deep Learning with Intel to its portfolio of products that it calls Ready Solutions for AI. Dell EMC’s Ready Solutions for AI is a set of standardized infrastructure stacks for machine learning and deep learning. Deep Learning with Intel includes all the hardware, software, and services customers need to get up and running quickly. The equipment is a scale-out cluster consisting of a single Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd master/login node and 16 Dell EMC PowerEdge C6420 dense compute servers in four C6000 chassis. Each compute node is interconnected with both a 1 gigabit Ethernet connection for access to the external network and Internet and a 10 gigabit Ethernet connection for internal traffic and data movement. On the software side, Dell EMC has integrated and validated Intel's Nauta platform. Nauta uses Kubernetes and Docker to provide a multi-user, distributed deep learning environment.   14. With the new update, WekaIO thinks it can provide secure multi-tenant environments even for applications running NFS or SMB. The new security enhancements will help ensure critical data is kept safe by providing encryption at rest and in-flight across the network. The update will also support authenticated mounts to prevent a rogue application from accessing the storage system; and PKEY multi-tenancy on InfiniBand networks. As part of the security updates, WekaIO is integrating their directory services management with its Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and Active Directory. They will also support Access Control List (ACLs) with multi-protocol interoperability between SMB, NFS and POSIX; and the ability to create multiple file systems for multi-tenant isolation.   15. Your video benchmarks would be much, much more useful with CODEC and bitrate? Emphasis mine. Given that this is a system review, I was surprised you didn't include any benchmarks to back up the gaming or audio claims made-- no gaming benchmarks/comparisons to other systems, no even basic audio benchmarks/measurements of things like DPC latency? And video encoding wasn't tested, only decoding? Also for an office system, noise, while not critical, might deserve some observations, especially under heavy load doing the gaming or video and audio mentioned? I realize this is StorageReview and not MotherboardReview.

Based on the performance of the benchmarks and the ad-hock testing that we performed on the system we feel that it would make a very good mid-range system for a demanding office user that uses typical office applications, does demanding web browsing, and plays streaming videos. The CPU and GPU in the system would work well as mid-range gaming or video and audio system. It should be noted that systems Type-C port gives this system the ability to work with eGFX enclosures.   22. Running the bleeding edge of software has its advantages and its disadvantages. I have found that running beta software in my home lab to be useful in testing client solutions, that being said I work with IT for a living and can generally spend the time to fix problems when they arise. It's ultimately a gamble, but in this case I've enjoyed the new features with few headaches along the way.   23. According to IDC, data will begin being generated at a rate of 103 zettabytes a year by 2023. Those numbers may go up before then. Data centers today leverage general-purpose architectures that are not up to the task of the coming data tsunami. Much of the data being generated or about to be is from video, IoT, Edge, and surveillance, all of which is sequential in nature and can be zoned into large chunks for better organizing and analyzing. Microsoft and Oracle hope that by allowing customers to run one part of a workload within Azure and another part of the same workload within the Oracle Cloud, their partnership will deliver a best-of-both-clouds experience. The partnership aims to provide direct network connectivity between two clouds while continuing to provide the customer service and support that enterprises have come to expect from the two companies.
