What was the best in 1999?

We debuted our 10K RPM Cheetah drives in 96. Here's an interesting PC World timeline on HDDs for anyone wanting to look it over.
  5. The new vFilO software is stated to provide both a scale-out file system for unstructured data, as well as the ability to virtualize existing storage systems. Files is now spread out more than ever and vFilO gives users the ability to assimilate it under a global namespace accessible via standard NFS, SMB and S3 protocols, without changing the data. DataCore says this allows data to be accessed independent of its location. More in depth, with a policy-based approach to performance, resiliency, cost, and aging, vFilO dynamically places data across available resources, ensuring proper access controls and load balancing in the process. DataCore Announces vFilO
  6. The quick rise and adoption of Kubernetes can offer several benefits while injecting quite a bit of complexity into everything. Now, the industry is seeing thousands of edge nodes running Kubernetes, and hundreds of cloud Kubernetes clusters. Canonical is looking to shake out some of the complexities with its new Kubernetes offerings as well as embrace standard corporate SQL databases for Kubernetes data stores. Canonical Enhances Kubernetes Reliability At The Edge
  7. Docker Enterprise Platform is widely used. One third of Fortune 100 companies use Docker Enterprise. The idea behind the platform was to enable developers to seamlessly build, share and safely run any applications anywhere - from public cloud to hybrid cloud to the edge. StackRox also announced that they scan container images so that they can provide alerts on language-dependent vulnerabilities. StackRox Releases Version 3 Of Kubernetes Security
  10. When Datrium Connect is rolled out in the first quarter of 2020, Datrium's disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) will support any vSphere infrastructure on-premises including SANs, NAS, HCI, and DHCI and any VMware workload on-premises as well as in the public cloud. According to the company, Datrium Connect takes just minutes to set up. Datrium Connect, like the baseline DRaaS we covered in August, still relies on low-cost Amazon S3 to store the deduplicated data for later recovery. Datrium focuses very heavily on minimizing the amount of data sent to or retrieved from the S3 data store. Not only is data deduplicated before storage, but the disaster recovery process checks for changes from the stored state and only replaces what it needs to during recovery. The company hopes this will minimize both costs and time to recovery. Datrium Announces Disaster Recovery as a Service for On Premise vSphere
  11. The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 has the power you need and the mobility that you want. At 3.74 pounds and 18.4 mm thin it is Lenovo’s thinnest and lightest 15-inch workstation. It brings new levels of power with the latest NVIDIA Quadro T1000 and T2000 GPUs. However, while the new graphics cards are built on Turing architecture they are not capable of supporting VR or AI. Display options have been elevated with the options of X-Rite Pantone Factory Color Calibration and the 4K UHD Dolby Vision HDR OLED display panel. Durability is on par with expectation and MIL-STD810G certification plus Lenovo’s quality checks ensure suitability for even the most extreme environments. Connectivity options are comprehensive and highlighted by the existence of two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB-A 3.1 ports, and an HDMI. Although, connectivity isn’t dongle free due to the mini gigabit ethernet. You’ll need some sort of dongle, extender, hub, or dock for an ethernet connection. The 80 watt-hour battery provides up to 13 hours of use and with Rapid Charge capability you can have almost another full charge in 60 minutes. Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 Review

  19. Reserve instances (RIs) work by offering a discount by the user purchasing the resources for a prolonged period of time, typically 1 to 3 years. Unlike their on-demand counterparts, users have to pay for the resources whether they are used or not. So with a little planning, organizations can save quite a bit taking this route. And since the landscape is dynamic by nature, AWS has made updates to make reserved instances more flexible with things like reginal benefits, convertible RIs (allowing users to change the OS or instance type when needed), and instance size flexibility.
