What controllers will work with Ultra320

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Hitachi Ultra320 73GB disk drive. Can you install this drive on a Adaptec 2940UW controller using some form of cable adapter or do I have to purchase a Ultra320 controller?

You can use your standard wide cable to plug it into your UW SE controller, but you will be performance limited by the bus. Any U2W, U160 or U320 controller will allow the drive to run at full speed, albiet in the case of U2W only with one drive on a bus at a time. However, if you're looking for a short-term solution, the 2940UW should work just fine.

Bus speed is governed by the lowest-common-denominator. In the case of a U320 HDD and a U2 HBA, the HDD will be limited to the HBA's maximum of 80MB/S. None of the Ultra320 interface features (like packetized transfers and CRC data protection and domain validation and read/write streaming) will be supported. However, U2 is a subset of U320, so the drive will work just fine (albiet slower than optimal).

The connector on the drive is either SCA or P68. The cable you need to connect the drive to the controller needs to be Ultra2 compliant, with a terminator, and must have the correct connector for the HBA at one end (probably P68), and the correct connector for the drive at the other end, with a Terminator hanging off the end, after the last connector position.
