IDE Drive works fine as slave, but can't install OS on it.

Recommended Posts

I have an older IDE drive which I wasn't sure worked. But the drive appears to run fine and passes all tests when hooked up as a slave. I tried to install WindowsXP on it, but when it comes time to boot off of the HD I get an error.

Is there some special tool or repair I can perform on this disk to fix the boot block?

Thanks for any info or suggestions.

Check to see what channel on the onboard IDE controller you have attached the drive.

Some (if not all??) motherboards won't let you boot off of a drive if its configured as the slave on the secondary channel. Check your motherboard manual to see it this is the case.

BTW, what other HDD's are in the system and how are they attached (channel, slave/master). Do you still have another OS on the other attached disks?
