Vertically mounting hard drives?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I found a freaky old case that I plan to use for my next project. However the 3,5" bays are vertical (not vertical in that the drives are resting on their sides but vertical so that the cable connectors face down towards the ground).

I was just wondering if anyone knows if being mounted in this orientation can be harmful to modern hard drives (Maxtor D740X in this case) and if there are any other negative consequences? (Noise, performance, MTBF etc?)

Regards,

David

It will work just fine. The last drives that minded a vertical orientation were in the 20MB class. (Yes, MB, not GB.)

Yeah, most of the recent HP pavilion series and IBM consumer models, have the drives mounted like this, so no worries.
