Seagate Begins Shipping 16TB Hard Disk Drives

Recommended Posts

Exos X16 HDD is the world's highest capacity 3.5" 7200 RPM drive, and drives in the line are 2-4TB larger than the next largest Exos drives, the X12s. The new X16 line has ten models to choose from, evenly split between 16TB and 14TB models with both SATA and SAS versions for both capacities. Exos X16 offers built-in data protection, Seagate Secure Instant Secure Erase to facilitate drive retirement. With a MSRP of $629, they cost almost twice as much as the 12TB models which go for about $350.

Yar, as noted... the cost per TB reflects that it's the highest-end, premium drive at the moment.

Cost per TB, at least when I checked today at Newegg, is much more reasonable-- and quite similar-- for the 12TB and 14TB...

For sure...we have a set of Exos coming in for review and hopefully get the 16TB NAS drives as well. Not that we're expecting a big performance change, but it's always fun to get a heavy box in the lab from Seagate.

Are these the first HAMR drives?

Also, is it really the first shipping 16TB drive? Toshiba announced a 16TB conventional (non-HAMR) months ago, without a shipping date.
