Toshiba Announces New 12TB & 14TB MN07 HDDs

Recommended Posts

The new MN07 Series is designed for NAS appliances that have 8 or more drive bays. The new HDDs are good for both NAS file and object storage applications requiring disk drives with workload ratings of up to 180TB per year. For performance in multi-disk NAS appliances, the new HDDs come with vibration compensation technology. The MN07 Series also offers AT 512e sector technology, 1 million hours MTTF, and compatibility with third-party 3.5” NAS enclosures.

It looks like we'll be getting some long-term reliability stats on Toshiba 14TBs as well. BackBlaze is buying 1,200 for deployment. From their Q2 2018 stats:

In Q2 we added twenty 14 TB Toshiba hard drives (model: MG07ACA14TA) to our mix (not enough to be listed on our charts), but that will change as we have ordered an additional 1,200 drives to be deployed in Q3.

StorageReview does different tests, so we're going to have a broad data set on the 9-platter design. I'm looking forward to the SR review. If the drives are good enough, they may force Seagate to start shipping HAMR models.
