Seagate Announces 14TB Helium HDD

Recommended Posts

Data is growing with no sign of slowing down. In fact with new disruptive innovations like the Internet of Things, data will only grow faster. Enterprises need a way to store this data for potential insights and it needs to do so without introducing too many new form factors. The Exos X14 keeps the same familiar 3.5” form factor but allows for even more storage. Seagate has achieved this through enhanced areal density. The new drive is said to offer the best power efficiency and performance for its class.

14TB and Helium. Sounds good, but all the other important specs are missing. Also missing on the pictured label - they should be in the blank space below the barcode.

RPM? Cache? Sustained sequential transfer speed? Platter count? PMR/SMR/host-managed SMR? MTBF?

To be fair this looks mostly like the official Seagate press release regurgitated, and that doesn't say much either.

It's PMR & 7200 RPM, the other details aren't officially released yet. Here is our Exos 14TB Blog Post and here's an article from Anandtech. Hopefully those help shed some light on it. The Anandtech one speculates on platter count, however there's nothing official circulating yet to confirm/deny from a company standpoint.
