Should I go with Nutanix? If no, please state your reason.

Recommended Posts

We are a mid size company base on number of employees, around 200.  Currently looking to replace converge environment (3Par F400 and HP Proliant G7's 4node) looking for hyperconverged and eyeing to get Nutanix because of features and function.

Seeking your inputs negative or positive.

Thank you,

Vee

It depends.  There is no right or wrong answer, there is only the right technology for your needs.

From an HCI market, the leading companies are DellEMC, Nutanix, and probably Simplivity, which is now HPE. (You can probably kiss that product good bye now that HPE owns it, and will mess it up)  Right here on Storagereview.com you can read up on reviews of VxRail by DellEMC.  Sadly no Nutanix review yet.

There are also VSAN ready boxes, where you can build your own HCI system, using your own HW vendor of choice.  HPE, Lenovo, supermicro, etc.

Personally, I would bring in, at least 2-3 vendors that you think fit to your requirements, like Nutanix and DellEMC, and perhaps a 3rd.  Listen to their pitch.  Ask them about competitive info as to WHY their kit may be better than the other.  But ultimately, get two quotes, pit them against each other, so that you make out like a bandit!  The market is tough and competitive, they will discount up front to win your business.  Never take their first pass price.

But like all negotiations, make sure to lock in your maintenance for multiple years, as well as node adds.  That may mean paying for multiple years up front to get better pricing, or get an agreement in writing.

I might argue that point ;)

To the question at hand, we need to know a lot more about the environment. In many (most?) cases vSAN is going to be less expensive. But if you're heavy on HyperV for instance, then vSAN makes no sense and Nutanix is a better platform. When comparing bids though, may sure you're looking at the all-in licensing pricing over 3 years. You might be surprised how expensive some of these HCI platforms get.

Hello Vee, just joined this blog, really interested how Nutanix puts seeds in peoples minds regarding HCI solutions. in my 27 year career in the Data Center arena, I've learned and grown in technology, learned a lot but 2 things that I will stand for is "There is no HCI Solution without the right software and the right hardware" I know this post is really old and by now you have done all you need you to need, for future reference you need to look really close to a technology that provides Hardware and Software Optimize Hyperconverged Solution.  Ex. look close at Cisco HyperFlex, unique technology that provides both, software and hardware from one single vendor.

Wow, HyperFlex...haven't seen that recommended in a very long time. Cisco won't even brief us on it any more. Not sure what's going on with that one. Do you have hands on usage with it?
