Serving up block storage as nfs/cifs

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,  I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on how to serve up block storage (iscsi or FC) as cifs/nfs.  Is there an appliance that might do this better than others? Or is it a build-yourself kind of solution.

I think you can use a NAS appliance with a NAS OS (like free NAS) on it. NAS appliance must have Ethernet port or FC port for supporting iscsi or FCP.

after that your block storage can serve up as cifs or nfs with free nas.

It could be as simple as just putting a Windows Server in front of the SAN.  Then use Windows file shares as needed.  I've got customers with up to 30TB's shared to 500 users, on a single file server.  I scoff at that, but they do it, and it works.  FreeNAS/OpenNAS and more are possible options too.

Your SAN may actually have a NAS option.  Give us the make/model and we can tell you more if possible.
