New Video Editing PC - Storage Needs!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am planning a new video editing PC build for the company I work for. In terms of storage plans, I am looking to do a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe internally for OS drive. In our current editing machine, I am using a hardware RAID controller (RAID5) with 4x drives. I'm kind of sick of RAID arrays for the most part. I am thinking a PCI3 x4 drive interface will give better performance, although there would be no redundancy.

I am looking at using a motherboard with Thunderbolt 3.0. It seems silly to plan on TB2 since it is already phasing out. The TB3 40Gb/s also seems very nice.

There doesn't seem to be much on the market for TB3 storage options currently. I'm looking at the Akitio PCIe Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. They have one with the Intel 750 in it, though it is around $1,200. I don't need 1.2TB storage in it. My thinking is that we keep a couple projects on it at a time for editing, and then offload it to a redundant NAS for backup. Are there any other ways of doing a NVMe x4 interface externally?

I'm sure the answer to this post will be much different in 2-3 months.
