Tripp Lite SRCOOL7KRM Rackmount Air Conditioning Unit Review Discussio

Recommended Posts

The Tripp Lite SRCOOL7KRM rackmount air conditioning unit is an 8U, rackmount cooling unit designed to cool racked IT equipment. The SRCOOL7KRM uses 7,000 BTU/h of cooling power to cool off heat-sensitive equipment at close range. The AC unit is fairly compact and ideal for places where floor space is limited such as inside of a rack or an IT closet. The unit can be used both to keep heat-sensitive equipment from shutting down or failing and it can potentially lower overall power consumption as it will focus on keeping the equipment that is most sensitive to heat cooler versus cooling down the entire room when a large portion of the equipment can function fine in warmer environments.

Interesting concept, but what about those people with a sealed server room(normally using a split duct unit)? What's out there that's server room class with both intake and exhaust ducts?

Well this unit does have an add-on kit where it lets you route the hot air through a mesh rack door and out of the room.

A completely sealed off server room does eventually present issues in cooling as you scale up. Not that is impossible or cool, but that the cooling solutions get more complex and expensive. Its much easier to route high-pressure refrigerant lines out of a room to a remote location, or water pipes for a cooling stack. Now a handful of 6" low pressure exhaust lines? That routing gets a little messy. So it really depends on the overall cooling need and what some of the constraints are.

I had two similar tripp lite ac units over 1-2 years and both died and were really bad at keeping the servers cool. I wouldnt recommend them. They also got a hugh premium over any other portable ac units. Just my two cents.

Which model? The SRCOOL12K got updated midstream... so that platform has changed since it first came out.

Also not sure where you are finding cheaper portable coolers. Kwikool, MovinCool, etc are all 3-5x in price compared to the TrippLite units. That is unless you are comparing the 120v 12k chiller versus a home portable cooler.
