Supermicro AOC-SLG3-2E4 vs 2E4R?

Recommended Posts

There's http://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-AOC-SLG3-2E4-NVme-PCIe-card/dp/B00O8K3K9Q and then http://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-AOC-SLG3-2E4R-Standard-internal-ports/dp/B00SZ655PQ

Supermicro has a page on the 2E4 http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SLG3-2E4.cfm but not the 2E4R. Just by looking at the pictures and the price one would think the 2E4R somehow doesn't have a PCIe switch. But that's definitely a PCIe x8 slot. So how on earth does that work??

Finally, would anyone where to get just the Squid PCI Express carrier board? http://www.transintl.com/controllers-raid-cards/pcie-storage-adapter/amfeltec.html without the disks.

Looking around, the non-R model is the one you should go for. Has the PLX switch and has much broader compatibility. On the R-model without a switch, since each card only uses 4x lanes of traffic, it might do something odd with the PCIe lane mapping.
