Advice on purchasing a NAS

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am looking to purchase a NAS system that I can plug in a few SSD into. I mainly want it for pictures, videos and work documents. I am thinking of purchasing the Synology ds1515+ with 5 Samsung 850 Pro 2TB. Will this work?

Thanks

Without trunking all the links, with a LACP supported GbE switch, the SSD's will be useless/overkill. Not to mention, your data access patterns may not benefit from it at all.

What you could do is use a pair of smaller SSD drives, and the rest larger 3-8TB SATA drives, and use the SSD as a read/write cache. Which is a feature for this unit.

Spinning drives in an array (even just a mirrored pair) with proper controller (let's say ZFS) can perform like local SSDs if connected with 10Gb ethernet of your choice. I prefer DAC cables and Intel x520's to the more expensive x540's. Definitely nothing wrong with SolarFlare, Myricom, Emulex and others. In a couple of years, those choices will probably consolidate to Intel and Avago.
