User Access to HR Share

6 posts in this topic

I keep getting asked who has accessed our HR Share. What is the easiest way to get a list of users who accessed a particular file or folder on a specific day or within a time range on my NetApp?

Thanks,

Mike

Enable CIFS auditing on the filer. It's a native feature within ONTAP. Contact your NetApp consultant for tips/tricks and caveats to the feature.

Perhaps you just need better ACL's applied to that directory...

Thanks, another question:

Every time an employee is let go, my department is asked what that user did on their last days. It sounds like all they want is a clean report that states what a user did on our VNX in their last few days at the company. What is the easiest way to get this done?

NetApp or VNX? Either way, there are software packages to help with this in addition to log mining.

You need something like RSA Endpoint Monitoring/Network Monitoring, or other similar products. Be warned, there is a HIGH cost for tools like this. I'd want you to be very clear when talking to HR/Legal when they make requests like this, the toolset is expensive.

But then again, one count of IP theft, employee theft, or employee damage, could more than make up for the tool's cost. As it stands, there is no easy/cheap/free/inexpensive way to do this. You will have to pay, a premium, for a tool that does what you're requesting.
