File Activity on a NetApp

7 posts in this topic

I'm constantly asked who accessed the HR share. What is the easiest way to get a list of who accessed a particular folder/file on X day or during Y date range on my NetApp?

There are software packages to do that. I'm sure there's something in the access logs but I don't think NetApp exposes it very easily. I could be wrong. Kind of the whole reason DataGravity started.

As mentioned, there is an entire industry for this type of logging and auditing. RSA comes to mind, but Veritas has their DLP product as well. Some can native'ly integrate with ONTAP , others crawl the filesystem for data.

Otherwise ONTAP does have features for this native. CIFS Auditing comes to mind. cifs.audit.enable or something like that.... Bewarned it doesn't keep much history. So hopefully you can pipe it out possibly.

Thanks for the help, guys! What about tracking who deleted a particular folder/file on X day or during Y date range? Any way to get this information without breaking the bank?

Again, still think you need to be looking at third party apps to get visibility into this data. I'm not sure how much StealthBits is, I'd ask and see.
