Latest paper on MLC vs eMLC vs SLC reliability

Recommended Posts

There was a study presented on Google's datacenter SSDs as of late:

https://0b4af6cdc2f0c5998459-c0245c5c937c5dedcca3f1764ecc9b2f.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/23105-fast16-papers-schroeder.pdf

Conclusions are interesting:

  • SLC not more reliable than MLC
  • 20-63% of SSDs develop a uncorrectable error in the first 4 years and 30-80% develop at least 1 bad block
  • Drives tend to have few or many bad blocks
  • Replacement rates for SSDs is lower, but their rate of errors is higher

Anyways, the full study is worth reading.

I suppose though that there is no real benefit in keeping SLC.

Kind of late now as SLC is largely gone, but the results are good reading regardless. Incidentally, SLC was largely intended for endurance as well.
