I can not use more than 32 HDD to build RAID6 - lsi megaraid 9271-4i

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I want build one or two RAID6 array. I have server with lsi megaraid 9271-4i with 5 enclouser. There are 80 hard drives WD 3TB. I tried build two arrays, 40 HDD each. I used webbios and MegaRAID Storage Manager (Windows). Firmware on my megaraid is updated. I want use HW array, not SW.

Everytime i can use "only" 32 HDDs. More HDDs i can not add. Yes, I can build three arrays, but I do not want that.

Can anybody help me? I do not know where is a problem...

Which enclosures/SAS expanders are you using? Are they on the compatibility list for your 9271-4i?

Page 13 of the manual (this may not be the newest one, it's Feb 2013):

http://docs.avagotech.com/docs/12353225

Shows a limit of 32 drives per drive group maximum, so if you want to use more than 32 drives you will need to use multiple drive groups.

Even in big iron arrays from the major manufacturers will state to not exceed some 6-10 drives in a RAID6 raid group. Then you join them within the filesystem or perhaps other SAN centric features. The rebuild time would be insane at that high of a drive count.
