RAID 0, Thunderbolt 2 enclosure for 2 SSDs

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a spare Samsung EVO 840 500 GB SATA III SSD. I'd like to buy another - Samsung EVO 850 then - and stripe them to a performant RAID 0 array. I expect around ~600 MB/s from a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure. Hower I only can find one that you can buy empty:

The AKiTiO Thunder2 Duo Pro

Are there alternatives? As I don't know the brand and the design of it.

Thanks!

Thanks, maybe I can get a used 840.

The Netstor is a bit over the top for me as I could get a WD Mybook Pro as well including Drives (non-SSD) however for around 600€ for 6GBs.

But does your suggestion mean, I could for the time beeing only put 2 drives into a 4 drive enclosure? I.e. the Akitio Thunder2 Quad (which has a handle :) )

The would leave the option to move to RAID 5 at a later time.

Yes, put two in a four bay enclosure then. Use NewEgg reviews, there are hundreds of options I'd guess.

FYI, Akitio Thunder2 Quad (which has a handle :) ) is not a RAID box, it's a simple JBOD. of course you can use the Disk Utility to create RAID0, but not raid5.

Under new Mac hardware, consumer's choices are some what limited, but in Window you can use USB3.1, then 650MB/s transfer rate should be no problem
