Lenovo W520-4270CTO WWAN slot HD

7 posts in this topic

Cannot find any specs on what type, size, dimension, brand etc. hard drive I can get and fit into the empty WWAN slot on my W520-4270CTO laptop. Spoke to 5 people at Lenovo Tech support and they could not tell me anything. They had no idea. DOes a regular 500-1T/7200RPM drive fit, or do you need an SSD only for the space? (That's like 6X the $$$).

WWAN slot is a mini-PCI-e slot I would think... can you post specs?

The mini-PCI-e slot on there is mini-PCI-e only so a mSATA drive would not work, but that's an assumption-- would be very good to pull up the user manual or service manual and check. If you're thinking a 2.5" drive would fit then we could be talking about something else entirely...

Hi, found this photo of the supposed WWAN available slot under the keyboard.

Not sure what type/size drive fits in here.

Best,

D.

Well yes, so clearly a HDD will not fit. An SSD should fit, just not sure if it's mSATA or something else as continuum says. The point may be mute however if you don't want an SSD anyway.

That's probably mini-PCI-e only. You would need to check the manual to see if it's also a mSATA slot, however I would guess that is very unlikely.

Service manuals says mSATA SSD is supported, so any full size mSATA ssd should work(no regular drive for the slot). Make sure it is a W520 as most other notebooks won't have the electrical support for mSATA(aka will fit but not work). Looks like it shipped with a Intel 310 mSATA SSD which you can use a reference design on what to buy. Intel, Crucial, Samsung offer great selections, but won't be cheap as mentioned.

1090 mSata sold state drive Note: if your computer is equipped with an mSata soldi state drive, it is instlaled in the WWAN card slot. WWAN and mSATA solid state drive are excluse to each other.
