SSD and data retention - Samsung 840 Pro

3 posts in this topic

Hi all,

I have Samsung 840 Pro 256GB drive. In spec of this drive is following info: 5 years limited (client PC use only, 1 year data retention)* 5 years limited warranty assumes a workload of 40GB/day (host writes, 3-month data retention) for enterprise applications. Workloads in excess of 40GB/day are not covered under warranty.

My question is:

What is data retention? Is this meaning the drive will lost all data on it if I won`t power up the drive through the 1 year (for example, I remove the drive from PC for a long time)? I don`t understand this parameter. What is diffrence between client PC use only, 1 year data retention and host writes, 3-month data retention? Only 3 months without power in write intensive environment and all data on SSD will be destroyed?? I use this drive at home mainly for read operations - must I worry about my data?

Thanks for reply!

Data retention is how long the NAND can hold your data without power.

NAND endurance refers to how many write cycles the NAND can accept before data can no longer be written to the drive.

99.99% or more of consumers who buy an SSD will never wear it out. And generally speaking, SSDs are a poor choice for storing data on long term, removed from a host system. HDD or tape even, would be better.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: see Brian's answer.

If you want the truly complete answer, there are some excellent articles on how flash memory works out there...
