SSD AND HDD COMBO?

4 posts in this topic

What's up everyone. I've been doing some research about the benefits of SSD compared to my original MacBook Pro's (early 2011) default HDD. I'm mainly wondering if there is any sort of benefit in combining the new SSD with the old HDD(moved to the optical bay) or if it would only be slowing it down. I guess i'm wondering if you utilize RAID as well if that will increase performance or not or if it would only be wasting space and time anyway. Thanks.

You do not want to RAID together an SSD and HDD, that would slow the SSD to the HDD's performance. The better idea is to move OS and apps to the SSD and use the HDD for secondary storage...if you have more data than fits on the SSD. You'll be very pleased with the decision to go SSD. You could also get an enclosure for the HDD and use it as external Time Machine disk or something.

I concur. Keep the second drive as a storage drive, and then you don't have to spend so much on a much larger SSD.
