Isnt that awesome.

If scientists prove something feasible, then working products are at least a decade away. The GMR Effect used in all current hard disk drives was discovered by 1987 and not applied to HDDs before 1998.

So we might have a 20 TB hard disk by 2023. The only issue: We will already have the PB SSD years before that date.

All indications are actually technology will be going BACKWARDS to go forwards, the basically abandoned magneto-optical is going to be the future, except the capacity is going to have increased up to about 8X, due to better track error and most importantly high frequency narrow beam UV lasers which make the write track very small.

Good news always about magneto optical drives is its semi-permanent nature to be both magnetic yet written thru liquifying a magnetic layer, to make the media nearly magnetic degradation proof, at least a hell of a lot better than HD platters.
