HDD WD2002FAEX overheating/ high temperature

4 posts in this topic

I´ve bought and testet a refurbished WD2002FAEX. In copy-progress (950GB about USB 2.0 Docking-station; several hours...) it reaches a very high temperature about 50° Celsius. I´ve read, this WD Black is a little bit hotter than oher HDD in the working process. But 50° is very high I think. What do you think, when will it be critical because of a overheating? Has anybody experiences?

Many thanks, in advance!

That's quite hot...I wouldn't let any of my drives run like that. Make sure your enclosure has forced air cooling. If it's one of those desktop docks, aim a fan at it. Heat is the enemy of all things electronic, especially hard drives.

Thanks for your answer - you´re completely right, heat is the enemy of all electronics.

The test via (crappy) Docking-station should not be a solution for a long time. And I´m the opinion that this connection has a correlation to the high temperature. Now I´m testing via SATA-connection and it reaches a temp of maximum 43 degrees of heat. I think that´s ok...?

So long as you're within drive operating spec, you'll be fine.
