4TB HDD but Windows 7 only recognizes arount 3TB

5 posts in this topic

Hey there,

I just received my new 4TB HDD (Western Digital Black WD-4001FAEX). When I try to partition it with the Windows hard drive manager it only shows me an available size of 2794,42 GB, so only around 3TB. I initialized it with GDP.

How can I get the whole 4TB?

My System configuration:

Windows 7 64 Bit

Gigabyte Mainboard: GA-MA69G-S3H

AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core BE-2400

... did i miss anything?

The first thing I'd do is make sure your BIOS is up to date. It's an older board so you might have to go with an add-in SATA card if the onboard controller just won't let you use > 3TB.

:D Wonderful, it works. Just worked myself through the BIOS update and now after rebooting Windows shows 3725,90 GB capacity on the new HDD. That should be the maximum possible size for that HDD, right?

Perfect, thank you so much!
