Highest capacity 7.0 mm drive?

10 posts in this topic

As far as I can tell, the highest capacity, 2.5", drive that fits into a 7.0mm laptop slot is the 500GB Western Digital WD5000LPVX and WD5000LPVT. Am I missing any 640GB or 750GB drives?

(I purchased a 1TB WD10JPVT and then found out it was 9.5mm high.)

You're right, 500GB is where those top out. Of course you can get the hybrid too, but it sounds like you're after capacity not performance.

Exactly! I have an SSD in the mSATA slot and I was hoping to put 1TB HDD in the normal drive slot. Guess I'll just wait for my next (!) laptop ... when of course I'll need 2TB of storage ...

What notebook do you have? If it has a 9.5mm or 12.7mm high optical bay, you could always try a Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy. Though if your notebook has mSata + 7mm primary, I am thinking it doesn't have an optical bay...

Other options:

1)2.5in USB 3.0 HDDs-fast and are not that inconvenient/cumbersome(depending on the situation).

2)Wireless portable storage device. 1TB options, plenty of "flavors"(wide range of features depending on model), decent battery life and it can come in handy if you have a smartphone or need to share files constantly with other peoples.

What notebook do you have?

This is a two-part answer ... The soon-to-be-discontinued laptop is a ThinkPad T420 which has a 9.5mm slot. It's configured with a 256G SSD (Vertex 4) and a 1TB HDD in place of the optical drive. Problem is that I need an optical drive every now and again so I've been resorting to carrying the optical drive along on every trip.

I see that the ThinkPad T430 has an mSATA connector so I'm thinking I can make the mSATA drive the boot drive, and move the 1TB WD drive to the internal slot. In this configuration, I can install the optical drive as well. Seems ideal, eh?

The problem was that the T430 drive slot, unlike the T420 drive slot, is only 7.0mm.

Now, neither the Vertex 4 nor WD 1TB drive fits. I can boot off the mSATA drive and I can still carry the 1TB drive in the optical slot, but I'm back to my original problem of having to carry the optical drive with me.

I'm carrying about 800GB of data so even a 256G SSD plus the WD 500G drive I was asking about earlier is inadequate. Truth is I'm no better off with the newer T430 than I was with the older T420.

Live and learn, eh?

If you took the shell off of the Vertex 4, would it fit in a 7mm slot?

;-) I'm not even going to try ... Besides, I've already repurposed it elsewhere.

FWIW, OCZ's new Vector is 7mm high.

Perfect! I can put the OS on the mSATA SSD and my absurd amount of training content on this 1TB drive in the primary drive slot.

Thanks for the heads up!
