Problems with LSI 9260-8i and 3tb WD Red disks

8 posts in this topic

I have an Lsi 9260 with a BBU and 8x3tb WD Red hard drives.

I've created a raid 6 virtual drive but, The initialization fails every time, whether fast/foreground.

Every drive fails, and gets kicked out.

Now these 8 red drives have been used in a raid 6 with an Adaptec 6805, and

HD Sentinel Professional reports no problems with them.

The 9260 is installed in a Supermicro X9SCM-F, tried the card in both pci-e x8 slots.

I've changed SAS cables, tried them in different backplanes in a Norco 4220.

It seems as though the Lsi card doesn't like these WD drives but I've seen others

using them without problems.

This 9260 previously ran a raid 6 with 5x4tb Hitachi Deskstars.

I have a support ticked in with Lsi support but haven't heard anything yet.

Any Ideas?

Are those drives on the hardware compatibility list for the LSI 9260-8i? If not, you may be out of luck-- there may be some sort of incompatibility.

No there not on the list, but others are using this same combination without problems.

Lsi support responded and advised to create raid 0 with 1 disk then, create and initialize

raid 0 with 2 disks, and so on until all 8 drives are in a raid 0.

And if that works try a raid 6 again.

Thanks

Just an update.

I moved the 8x3tb WD reds back to another server connected to an Adaptec 6805 controller.

Now these drives are failing a raid initialization with this card, every single disk is

being kicked out and disappears from view.

Now I'm really stumped, I just had a raid 6 array with these disks before deciding to

move them to the Lsi 9260.

So the drives are failing on a 6805 too? Are they on the HCL?

Two completely different controllers in two completely different systems would make me suspect the drives are bad, but that would require somewhat more testing to confirm.

Hi and thanks for responding to this situation.

The Red series isn't on HCL of either controller.

I think I might have figured out what was going on thought.

The Adaptec card was transferred to my New Norco 4224, the link

failures were on the same two backplanes.

I thought it might be the 4-pin x 7 power adapter that Norco makes.

So I changed that out for 3 separate adapters to power the six backplanes

and started this morning to create a raid 5 with just 4 disks but, one of

the disks failed with an uncorrectable bad block.

I've just come back from exchanging the bad disk with a new one as it was

within the stores return policy.

After this new disk is put through is't paces with HD Sentinel professional

I will use it to attempt to create a raid 6.

The 9260 I have doesn't like the reds. I don't know how others use them but, they do.

I am running 6x Western Digital Red 3TB in RAID6 on Adaptec 6805 without issues.

Hi nubbel,

I have been running 8x WD Reds 3tb in raid 6 on Adaptec 6805 without any problems also.

I never could get the 9260 to accept the red drives no matter what I did.

Wish I had bought another 6805 instead of the 9260, Its more compatible with disks.

Thanks
