Port Multiplier off of Areca 1680 - will this work?

3 posts in this topic

I'm new to the use of port multipliers.

Currently I have a 16 port Areca 1680IX RAID card with 16 SATA drives connected in RAID 60 using 4 SFF8087 to SATA beakout cables.

I wish to connect 3 more SATA drives to the RAID card as a new RAID set.

Can I use something like the SYBA SY-PCI40037 ?

You'd have to find out from the manufacturer which expanders are compatible. We've run into situations where certain RAID cards have no compatibility with some expanders while others are just fine.

Enterprise SAS/SATA expanders usually use an LSI chipset. I don't think introducing a consumer-grade Jmicron/Syba expander into a serious RAID array would be a good idea.

Since you are making a new array, perhaps the best solution would just be to add an additional RAID controller to your system.
