Looks like it's suffereing from too few dies for parallel access. Especially compared to the Renice with its previous gen controller. It's a nice drive, but I wish they'd build 4 GB dies at 2x nm. This way the small drives could be a few $ more expensive (more overhead for smaller chips), but be as fast as drives one capacity group higher with 8 GB dies.

I have seen PCI-e based SSD to have a modular stacked design. where each SSD module stacks on top of another. Is something like that available for none PCI-e based SSDs.
