you mention two versions but I have to wonder if they didn't just show two drawings to show the single connector design could work with old and new drives (new having the "tabs protruding" as you called them).

Hasn't WD or someone been doing this for years, only their variation grabbed the sides of the connector instead of the top and bottom?

Pretty much as I mentioned in the article, the main focus of this patent was the retention/gripper section. The clips on the side (as seen on many mini-SAS breakout cables too) can be a pain to remove carefully. Kind of curious where this setup will be used though, since it does require ample clearance on the backend of the drive to grip onto.
