MTTF of network cables

No idea, but we've had multiple (if you include customer sites, probably into the thousands) of Infiniband cables in use for years.

We find it is much more a factor of how many insertion cycles the cables have had, how tight the cables have ever been bent, and MAYBE temperature if you are operating out of spec of the cables. Given our environment here we have had cables fail from excessive mate/de-mate (insertion) cycles but I forget the specs off-hand.

That said we also run through enough cables here that yes, we have seen decidedly non-zero infant mortality as well as decidedly non-zero DOA cables.

Insertion cycles and bend radius are probably the main killers of most cables. Coming from the testing side its surprising which cables/backplanes hole up well and which start throwing errors very quickly. Recently on some of our miniSAS test bed cables, we finally hit the mark where some of the connections could no longer support a stable negotiation speed. Talk about confusing issues until you realize it was the cable causing those problems!

Unless the external package is being moved around frequently or handled improperly (folding a cable in half or kinking it) the lifespan would rate between infinite if setup and ever touched again to probably a number of months if it sees frequent insertion cycles. Trying to think back to the rating on some of our miniSAS stuff but it might have been 500.

Are there still some connectors that don't use wires that are gold plated? I suppose if they were straight copper that could help.
