Icy Dock 4 in 3 SATA Internal RAID Backplane (MB974SP-B) Review Discus

Recommended Posts

The Icy Dock 4-in-3 backplane gives users easy access to four hard drives in the space occupied by three 5.25" drive bays in a typical PC case. The unit is highlighted by tool-less/tray-less hard drive slots and dedicated SATA connections making it an ideal RAID backplane. Icy Dock has also thrown in a bunch of extras like individual drive power buttons, front mounted USB and eSATA ports and a three mode, user-replaceable fan.

Can this trayless model accomodate SATA III? The Icy Dock website updated the info for the 4-in-3 tray model to reflect SATA 3 compatibility, but has not done so with this model. It's electrically compatible by nature, isn't it? I was tempted by this model about 6 months ago.

Hi Axl, the current version doesn't support SATA III hard drives. We found that one of the drive bays is unstable when using with SATA III hard drives, and we believe it is an interference issue between the SATA connections. We are working on a revised PCB and we will post an announcement on our website when the new revised board becomes available.

Thank you,

ICY DOCK
