Samsung SSD 830 Series Announced Discussion

Samsung has announced their new family of SSDs, the SSD 830 series. The new drives will offer a SATA 6Gb/s interface and will be the only current generation SATA 6Gb/s SSDs built entirely in-house; leveraging Samsung NAND, processor and firmware.

These drives look nice but it will take reliability and compatibility for them to succeed. The first SSD company to delivery trouble-free, reliable, consumer grade SSDs at a competitive price will make a lot of money. Let's hope it's soon.

They have a good chance, since they control all the important parts...but it may take a year or longer to know for sure the drives are good in thousands of different system configs.

I am looking forward to this SSD hitting the market. Samsung will likely use their new toggle DDR 2.0 NAND flash chips, made using 20nm lithography and sporting a 400Mbps interface (which is 3 times faster than their last generation NAND chips). Also, they will probably be introducing a new controller. It will be interesting to see if Samsung's controller is competitive against the sandforce controllers.

Based on the specs their OEM drive, it doesn't look like the specs will come very close to the SF drives, but if they're pretty good, that might be all they need if the reliability and compatibility are good.
