New ThinkPad in the Test Lab

Just got our first Sandy Bridge notebook today and started cranking on benchmarks. Expect to see a first thoughts tonight or tomorrow morning, and a full review in a couple of weeks. Any questions or tests you want performed let me know ;)

We hope to add a contrast meter to our lab, but the 2k price is kind of our there for now. Anything less and you can't measure stuff worth a damn.

Any chance of throwing a linux live cd in and seeing how those hard drives and solid state drives are identified?

Id love to see it installed on the msata drive, but I may be pushing my luck :)

Regarding the already published test: I've seen you put screen brightness to 50% for the "road warrior" test. It's a reasonable estimate, but if you see any chance it would be better to set the display to a fixed brightness, i.e. 100 nits. Otherwise you penalize notebooks which offer a higher maximum brightness.

The mSATA drive reports as any other SSD. Cloning software like Acronis which runs with a Linux heart sees the drive just fine.

Any preferred Live CD? Knoppix... Ubuntu?

Also yea I think we are the only storage-only guys out there. Lots of places cover SSDs and systems, we are one of the few, if only, places that cover everything with a specific storage focus.

Yea that is one of the items we are trying to work around until we have proper light measuring gear. Depending on how things go with manufacturers on these system reviews (its still new ground for us, still in the proving stages) we might be looking to pick something up towards the end of this year.

I'm wondering if a simple photodetector / diode would work in conjunction with a dark room, a fixed screen content (all white?) and a defined distance screen - sensor. Should be much cheaper than professional equipment, but won't give you a measurement in nits.

Not entirely sure what just happened, but 6.0 is now working as intended (also as seen above in the dmesg dump). The only explanation I can think of right now is something was up with the drivers during our first look. Both the Intel RST utility and CDM results were showing 3.0Gbps speeds through the Intel SSD 510. Now they are 6.0 across the board.

Any chance you could figure out what happened just in case others encounter the same issue? I ordered a T520 and am trying to decide which SATA III drive to buy- I'm excited that you'll be running some of the top drives in the unit, have you considered installing the Crucial C300, as I hear the M4 isn't as strong in a few benchmarks? Also, if I run a clean install with the Lenovo disc when I pop in a new drive, do I still get the Lenovo "Enhanced Experience 2.0" benefits of efficient driver configuration? Lenovo was quoting sub 10 second boot times for a lot of its SSD units- and those were at SATA II speeds. Excited to see what you guys can pull down with the cream of the crop.

I will double check through the Lenovo System Update area, but I believe all the unique/specific drivers can be re-downloaded if you do a clean install. We do still have the 256GB C300 sitting around, and would be glad to add it to the list. It might not make it to the final published charts though. If thats the case we will still include the scores in the forum.

This review is in the final stages of being edited and will be posted shortly (day or two). We also now have a W520 and X220 in the review channel now as well. W520 will be up after the T520 and will have a slightly faster turn around time since both notebooks share the same chassis and will have a lot of copied content (outside of performance/display which are different).

Also I have the C300 values to post once the T520 review goes live. It ranked slightly above the C400/m4.

Hi. I'm new to this website and I just read your review of the T520. Thank you! I have been waiting to read a review on the new T or W series thinkpad's since they were first announced in February. I am looking into getting a W520, but would like to know as much as possible about how the Intel 310 SSD used with an HDD would impact performance and battery life over using a single, larger SSD or HDD. I would like to see some "real world" benchmarks if possible. For instance, boot up times and application loading times. How much of a performance difference is there when opening a large file from the HDD to an application from the SSD, opposed to using an SSD or HDD only? Also, how does multiple drives impact battery life in some different scenarios (i.e. watching movies, web surfing, gaming, etc)? I've read all of the positive impacts of the mSATA drive with an HDD, I would just like to know if there are any drawbacks, and how significant they are. Thank you.

@SSD - we have the W520 and are working it over now. We also have the X220. Still waiting on T420.

@Brick - Great questions and comments, welcome to the forums. I'll leave some of this for Thomas and Kevin, but generally you won't see much negative associated with the mSATA Intel drive. It uses very little power in idle, ao if you're watching media off the platter drive, you should see very little real world impact. The savings from not having to use the HDD during other activities would surely balance the battery life equation, if not tilt it to better with the mSATA, depending on how you have files on the two drives allocated.

Hi. I'm new to this site and forum and just wanted to say thanks for the great review on the T520. I'm currently considering either the W520 or the T420(s) and I was wondering if you could possibly check something for me...

I've searched all over the web (thinkpad forums, lenovo forums) trying to confirm that these new thinkpads can drive a 30" monitor at native resolution. Seems like a simple question and I usually get responses like, "well the tabook.pdf says max external resolution is 2560x1600 so it should work." But when I dig deeper, I haven't found a single person who actually has it working. (Correction: I did find one person who got it to work via a docking station). I know that older 30" monitors that don't have display port require dual-link dvi to drive that resolution, meaning that you need a display port to dual-link dvi cable to run it. But all the reports on the web i'm reading state that when people try using this cable, it causes screen flickering to the point where it's unusable (even when powered). Also it's quite annoying that the adapters have to be active or powered.

I was really hoping that if you have a 30" lying around in the lab, you could test this for me. I have the following questions:

1. Will the T420 or T520 or W520 drive a 30" display at 2560x1600 (native res)?

2. Will the T420 or T520 or W520 do this without a docking station?

3. If I have a newer 30" monitor with a display port input (Dell 3008WFP or Dell U3011, or new 27" apple cinema display), will a simple displayport to displayport connection directly from laptop to monitor work?

Thanks in advance and no problem if this isn't something you can test for. Just thought I'd ask. There's actually a 'green' component to my asking, I'm an architect and I prefer using the 30" monitors b/c i print so much less and waste so much less paper. Hope that gives you incentive to try this...

It looks like Lenovo may have shipped the faulty Sandy Bridge chipsets in their W520 laptops (more here). This will be a problem is a mSATA device is installed. I just received my W520 yesterday and I am quite concerned because I planned to put in an Intel 310 mSATA device. Can SR investigate this issue and update their reviews so people don't get stuck with unusable laptop configurations?

Turns out its B3 chipsets reporting as B2 for software/drivers sake. None of the notebooks in the ThinkPad line were ever shipped with the flawed B2 chipsets.

Appreciate it Kevin! I also appreciate the info on the lack of a RAID controller in non-factory-RAID-equipped W520 laptops. My W520 doesn't have the ability to enable it just like the other poster. My system will probably be approved for return to Lenovo to get this and one other option issue sorted out. If so, then I'll open up my W520 to take a picture of the writing on the chipset prior to boxing it up. That should remove any/all doubts.
