Two Intel SSD 510s on the Test Bench

Recommended Posts

As the title implies, we have two of these bad boys on hand for testing. We are wrapping up the single drive review tonight and will be working on an article covering RAID0 and RAID1 performance over the weekend.

Which incidentally is something Intel drives have been pretty good at. If only we had two more for RAID 5/6 ;)

We'll have something up next week likely, we will have four SSD 510's total, so all sorts of fun. If you have any specific requests, please let us know.

There are of course plenty of iometer tests that could be interesting but they rely heavily the on raid controller used for the testing.

The 9260 w/o FP-Key is OK, everything changes with the Key installed and by that time you are more or less testing the controller and not the SSDs.

Keep it simple, stick to ICH/PCH/HBA raids, but lets see how this ends, you might end up producing some good and usefull reading :)

Looking forward to this review!

Well the problem with cheaper/simpler RAIDs is most either aren't reliable long term (look at all the people complaining about their ICH-raid having drives dropping) or some give terrible performance. We got one of those HighPoint HBAs for initial testing of the C300 before we got the 9260, and the thing actually caused our computer to bluescreen during our trace runs. That is why we have stayed with the LSI RAID card for so long... its reliable, decent performance, and modest pricerange.

YMMV

Most people do not use SSDs for anything but raid-0 which is not a problem, it's just a matter of keeping backups.

For SSDs the ICH/PCH/SB850 are all great both in value and performance, up to 3-4 drives easily outperforms almost any raid card out there.

I have yet to lose any data using the ICH/PCH and I'm not the average Joe :), but ymmv of course, raid needs to be run at a stable system, raid-0 in particular.

Unless you've got the FP key you'll be pretty limited at iops, throughput is superb both with and without the Key.

Sandy Bridge is early yet but raid performance is great, 4 drives > 1GB/s throughput and ~180.000 iops ;). (from my testing)

Well it will probably be 1-2 weeks minimum before the SB rig is up and going, but we will be able to revisit its performance on that platform. Most of the pieces are here except a few items like the motherboard and graphics card

Still working...we have the LSI Warp Drive review in front of the 510 RAID. Hoping for Friday/Monday range on the 510.
