Are you using it externally over USB or trying to use it as an internal drive?

Windows XP does not properly support HDDs larger than 2TB because:

1. Windows XP does not have driver that support HDDs karger than 2TB [2.2TB],You must have Windows Vista with sp1 or sp2 or Windows 7.

2. MAster boot record [MBR] can not adress [or works] with hard disks [partitions] larger

than 2TB. if you want to make partitions properly - HDD must have GPT [GUID Partition Table] - not MBR.

3. BIOS can make problem too; It need [must] support UEFI.

My English maybe is bad but I think you will anderstand me.

WinXP 32 or 64 should work fine with an external 3TB disk. WinXP will not work with a 3TB internal disk.

Perhaps try booting an Ubuntu live CD and partitioning/formatting it there?

ED: External meaning USB or 1394, not e-sata.
