Western Digital Scorpio Black 500Gb Review

4 posts in this topic

Although more than two years have elapsed since its public unveiling, the 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black continues to hold the distinction of the fastest platter-only notebook drive we’ve tested at StorageReview.com. Sure, some SSDs have turned in better numbers, and the hybrid SSD/HDD Seagate Momentus XT even succeeded in besting WD’s long-running benchmark champion. But among pure HDDs in 2.5-inch format, the Scorpio Black has, against all odds, continued to rule the roost for what can fairly be described as an eternity in the world of technology.

Great review. I can't believe it took WD this long to come out with a 500GB Black drive; Seagate's drive has been out for well over a year and Hitachi had their 7K500 out months ago.

Some things missing from the review are heat, noise, and vibration. David, any comparisons to the 7K500/7200.4?

I have been using a 7K500 in my notebook for several months now and have been very satisfied. It hardly makes any noise and produces minimal vibration. And on top of that, it has been reliable. I don't think the WD 500GB Black drive is worth upgrading to given I already have the 7K500.

I've been using (on Thinkpad T60 and T61p) the WD 320GB and 500GB Black for 2 years now and I must say that they vibrate a lot, the 500GB is very very worst, plus de the noise level is I think un-acceptable for a business notebook.

Last 2 weeks i've been using a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB and they noise and vibrations are almost par with Lenovo's 5400RPM .

Some things missing from the review are heat, noise, and vibration. David, any comparisons to the 7K500/7200.4?

Indeed, it would've been great to learn about that in the review considering it's mainly a notebook drive.
