Hard Drive Porn (Safe for Work)

Recommended Posts

As mentioned a month or so ago I was greeted with a puff of smoke and a dead 7200.2 Seagate drive for my laptop after going through the RMA process. Since I am not bothering with another repair, for SCIENCE I took the drive apart. :D I also included a single platter 80G 3.5" Hitachi for good measure. Let me know what you guys think, special thanks to Brian for helping with the shots.

That sound you just heard was our server crying :)

Also, can we conjure up any NSFW storage photos, lol. I'm not entirely sure what that would look like.

Well, Bender indicated robot porn consisted of kinky circuit diagrams ... ;)

The lower set of pictures seems to show some sort of residue from the sealing gasket. That's usually a no-no in drive design, though it may consist of only harmless substances.

Laptop drives still look tiny to me. All relative to what you're used to seeing, I suppose. :D

ST410800N, Seagate Elite 9, 5,25" full height SCSI monster with 9 GB capacity and idle power consumption of 31 watts :D

It was still in full working condition when I took it apart.

Ahh, I didn't look at the entire image, my fault :P

Incidentally, I haven't been to the range in a while, but the ones around here won't let you shoot anything but paper.

Getting way off topic, but I shoot a couple .45 1911's, 9mm Glock and 9mm Rohrbaugh.

that was done with a .40 cal USP Compact. the .308 was a Savage Scout. i can post pics of those too if you want :)

the .40 cal was a 187 grain JHP. that would explain the lack of penetration. i wanted to make other shots on it with different ammo, but i didnt have enough drives.

that was a perfectly good Atlas 10k i might add... but i wanted to shoot them. if you have any dead drives and you want them shot, send them my way. i will shoot them and send them back to you. lol..

Dead drives? Bah, I've got a couple review units here that would do the trick ;)

"Uh, sorry WD, yeah, we dropped the drive and it got holes in it. Not sure what happened, but thanks for the loan."

A lot of people love the USP...we might need a new off topic thread for gun discussion. "The Best Way to Shoot a Hard Drive"

to be fair, I can't give away some of my old SCSI stuff. So target practice it is!

Actually if you have any Maxtor atlas 10k V drives (that work) - i'll be happy to take them off your hands.

And I can trade for an old dead scsi drive if you need any other targets.

I don’t think WD will ever loan you anything again. "Brian, these look like bullet holes." "What? So now WD is in the ballistics business? I don’t think so!”

I had a Glock 23 but the “double action” trigger pull made me nervous. I didn’t like the spongy feel. Seeing that I “out grew” my Glock and I didn’t like the spongy feel I wanted to get a new pistol that better reflected my lifestyle and personality. I sold it and got a Sig 239 two tone with wood grips. I call it my pimp gun. However, I had an “oh stinker” moment when I need a gun for actual work. You should have seen me with my pretty little pimp gun all afraid to nick the wood grips. When I went to toss my pistol under the seat of the vehicle we went out in I realized instantly I needed a utility sidearm. I felt like such a douche. The first chance I got, I went onto gunbroker and bought a used USP Compact for $600.

Now, when I’m in the city I carry my pimp gun. But when its 4 wheelers, jeeps, dirt and humping hills I carry my USP.

I’m a huge advocate of carrying one pistol and one pistol only, so I’m a bit of a hypocrite for my carry style now. However, to stay consistent with muscle memory I make sure I always carry the same caliber and, most importantly, always a double action only trigger with no mechanical (manual) safety.

to be fair, I can't give away some of my old SCSI stuff. So target practice it is!

I was walking out the door and saw it attached to on old test bed. I thought, "ah, what the heck..." I yanked it off the cable and off to the shoot it went... poor thing.. gave me a lot of good years of service...
