Need help interpreting SMART failures

Recommended Posts

I installed smartmontools on my fileserver last week, and that was probably a good idea since I just found the first error message in my inbox:

Device: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG_HD501LJ_S0MUJ1DP930587, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

For details see host's SYSLOG (default: /var/log/messages).

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
No additional email messages about this problem will be sent.

I did a short self-test then:

SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1
Num Test_Description	Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 90% 2836 466413607

Here are the SMART values for the drive:

smartctl -H says:

=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

So what am I supposed to do? Do I have to replace the drive, or is there any way to fix it?

You must run manufacturer's disk utility on it from DOS and do ZERO-FILL / FULL FORMAT / FULL ERASE... or whatever similiar item is there.

After you must check the SMART values and see if that pending sector is allocated or gone (successfully written).

No problem if there is no increase in values after full erase, but you better watch the drive and see if it will develop more bad sectors.

Do not commit any data to that drive without having it stress tested for few days.
