Minimun length for internal SATA cables?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I checked all the online shops which are located in my country but couldn't find a single one that is selling internal SATA cables shorter than 20 cm (that's about 8 inch). So I started to wonder if there is such a thing like a minimum length.

It seem's that there are a hand full of shops around the world that have cables even as short as 4 inches. But why are there only so few? Is it because these cables may be out of spec? I can't imagine that there is no demand for them as most motherboards have the SATA-ports located at the outer rim and cables no longer than 20 cm should be sufficient (In my case even 8 cm would be enough).

While i could imgine limits in theory (signal reflection delay times, etc.), i do not think that SATA is susceptible for them.

Sata in notebooks often runs over just a few cm of film cables, and the mobile chipsets use (more or less) the same drivers than the desktop ones do.
