'Merging' Two Drives

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can someone please advise me on weather or not it is possible to 'merge' two drives, I am looking to increase my storage by 1Tb, and given current prices it seems more sensible to buy 2 x 500gb drives.

Is it possible to 'merge' these two drives, under Vista, so that they appear as one, thereby making it easier for organisation of my files?

This is normally called as disk spanning. I am not sure if most fakeraid or (BIOS raid) supports that. You do realize that this is not significantly better than raid 0 as if one drive dies it will be very difficult to recover the data on the good drive and also there is no performance gain by doing this.

You can either create a RAID 0 via hardware / or host based hardware if your onboard or add-in controller supports it, or you can use Vista to create a dynamic volume that spans the two drives. The former will be faster, but in either case if either drive dies you should count on losing all your data.
