NCQ pros and cons in a single drive worksation and music player?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

NCQ pros and cons in a single SATA II drive worksation and music player?

What do you think?

I have read somewhere that NCQ can even degrade workstatuion performance.

Any suggestions or good links?

I guess that it's discussed here many times but forum search doesn't return any hits.

Possibly shorter then 4 letter serach are prohibitted?

It is just because of poor implementation of NCQ management. First report of actual performance growth was from people with Areca controllers (with IOP341). And if no other top of the line SATA controllers could do the same before, you can't expect a good NCQ managenet from a basic "dumb" onboard controller.

Quality of NCQ implementation also varies by drive manufacturer. Maxtor had a pretty good one, but they are unfortunately no longer with us. *sniff*

*cryes for the death of the glorious Atlas 15k*

For general purposes on a single drive, i would turn off NCQ, period.
