What enclosure to get?

Recommended Posts

Yeah... There's a lot of incompatible "SATA-to-USB" bridges out there. Some retailers here in Finland include a disclaimer with the SATA enclosures they are selling: "only to be used with Seagate" drives.

Stay away from Mapower SATA-to-USB as they are Seagate only as well.

A few days back I got the Vantec Nexstar NST-360SU-BK eSATA case and it has been very good. I get nearly the exact same data transfer speeds if I have the same HDD in the Computer case or in this external case. I use a Hitachi SATA II 7K160 160GB HDD in the case and it idles at 38C. The main advantage of this case over USB cases is that I can boot XP off the HDD in this case.

I've purchased the Pleiades Super S-Combo (Passively cooled):

http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hdd3/pleiades/pd_scombo

It's based on the Oxford 924 DSB chipset. Whilst I use Seagate Harddrives exclusively (I like the 5 year warranty), I've never had any issues with this drive using SATA, Firewire 400 or USB. Not sure how it goes with Western Digital drives though. Anyone else have any experience with this Oxford Chipset?

I haven't tried the Firewire 800 support as my motherboard (Asus a8n-SLI premium nForce4 based) doesn't support it.

Regards,

Michael.
