WD starting production of 160GB/Platter disks?

Any word on WD releasing a "RAID Edition" of the AA drives (RE3?).

Later... After the new consumer versions have proved their reliability in real life. This may-be about half a year later (my speculation, judging from the strategy of releasing most of previous RE-series).

These RAID Edition series will have the model codes in form WDxxxxABxx

WD5000ABKS

WD4000ABKS

WD3200ABKS

WD2500ABKS

WD1600ABKS

WD5000ABKB

WD4000ABKB

WD3200ABKB

WD3200ABJB

WD2500ABJB

WD1600ABJB

(the most probable models listed; completely unofficial information)

Since Seagate, WD, Maxtor, Samsung have not yet implemented the park ramp for 3.5" series that Hitachi is doing for long time. I had to wait for my local store to get back selling hitachi HDs that was YEARS, now yay, I am able to! Just ordered the 160GB hitachi.

Cheers, Wizard

All these new 160GB-per-platter WD's have this park ramp just like Hitachis.

Also the very last true Maxtors (DM17 = 160GB-per-platter) have that too.

And now, after long waiting, finally...

WD has updated its website, too.

Showing all of the new generation drives they are producing now.

The current 3.5" internal drive selection for WD is:

It's nice to add that just now WD has started to produce also PATA 400/500GB drives, too. Based on their latest 167GB-platter generation design:

WD5000AAKB = 500GB 16MB PATA

WD5000AAJB = 500GB 8MB PATA

WD4000AAKB = 400GB 16MB PATA

WD4000AAJB = 400GB 8MB PATA

As always you can't find them on WD's website yet but they are already arriving to distributors and shops now...

PATA isn't dead still...

Googling WD3200AAJB returned some results. So I guess no 16MB cache for 320GB PATA (same sad case as T7K500).

WD3200AAKB is available in the channel now (also confirmed by a WD rep).

Quite an old post but yes, WD does use the ramp now. I'm not sure when Seagate and Samsung will add them though. I'm sure the engineering of the ramp isn't as simple as we (or I) might think. Biggest problem is probably preventing the plastic from releasing particles of debris as it wears, or rather preventing such wear altogether.
