Icon loading in folder maxing out CPU?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all-

I've got a folder with about 1,700 files in it - half are txt files and half are mht (IE archive files). Everytime I open the folder, windows has to "reload" the icons. Everytime this takes FOREVER and totally maxes out my CPU. Is this normal behavior!? I thought windows would cache those icons and be done with it.

Machine is:

2.4c

1gig of RAM

P80 160gig

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

I don't know if it is possible for an .mht file to have the file icon embedded in the file. It could also cause the reload every time. Combine this with AV SW scan of the file while the icon is fetched, and you'll have long delays, especially if the files are large.

Cheers,

Jan

best bet: change the view of that folder to 'icons' or 'list' to keep it from showing the quick render of the page. chances are it is in the view 'thumbnails' which causes it to render all those pages. With those types of files, it won't save the thumbnails in the thumbnail cache, so it has to render them all over again. That is your best bet.
