samsung raid 0 vs. a faster single drive

Recommended Posts

Currently I have a couple WDxxxxJD series drives. I think they could be more silent. Also I think RAID 0 could be nice to speed up my system overall, since I'm sure my HD's are the slowest part of my system.

My question is how do you think a couple Samsung P120's would behave in RAID 0, say compared to my WD3200JD as a single drive, in terms of boot up speed, loading games, etc... I know the WD3200JD has better performance as a single drive, but would the RAID 0 P120's be faster? What about compared to a single 150 gb raptor, is it a close call or is there a clear winner?

Thanks,

Andrew

From what ive seen at:

http://faq.storagereview.com/tiki-index.ph...gleDriveVsRaid0

and at

http://www.overclockers.com/articles1297/index03.asp

you might decrease boot time and large file usage significantly, even some apps like photoshop shows a big speed increase but on general usage the speed increase is 5% to at most 10% on average. If sanity rules and noise is no problem a single raptor is the best setup you can get.

Personally im thinking of buying two 80GB Samsung SATA-II drives and raid0 them keeping my samsung 250GB as a backup drive. Im no fan of noise either so i really like my samsung 250GB.

I've had some HDDs made by WD, Samsung, and other brands and also tried some RAID 0 arrays. Does RAID-0 work well with Samsung's latest SATA or PATA HDDs?
