This may sound stupid but I thought about it in the shower...

When you take say 267 pieces of wood, and you multiply them by 0, why do you get 0 pieces of wood? If it were the other way around like multiplying 0 267 times you are left with 0.

"Multiplying" is really just a representational way of presenting addition in the form of groups. When you say "2 times 3" you are really saying "2 + 2 + 2," or "3 groups of 2." (Incidentally, that's why "of" is the linguistic symbolic for multiply.)

With this representation in mind, what happens when we ask for zero groups of 267? Well, the addition we are representing here is ___. In other words, you cannot have zero groups of 267 (or of anything) add up to any value, so the answer is zero. And conversely, zero added to itself 267 times is, of course, zero. Ergo, multiplying anything by zero or zero by anything will always be zero.

um...on the topic of stupid questions...who the heck is Aria Giovanni?

0 has always been an interesting entity.

Literally, there are specific properties associated with it. For example:

0 + c = c; where c is a constant

0 x c = 0 (as stated above)

0 / c = 0, c not = 0

c / 0 = undef.

0! = 1

0 / 0 does not = 1

etc...

and I believe that there's actually a book about it, called "0 - the nothing that is"

It's not just her obvious sexual attributes - it's her FACE. Great T&As are possible by surgery - a face like hers just connotes mystery and a suble trace of je ne sais quois that, well, I can't say. You just KNOW she is probably a raging lowlife drug addict in real life (as many porn actresses are), but there is something very mysterious and almost classic about her face. Something smoldering...and that's what I like. I remember seeing similar looks on a lot of upper crust French women when I lived in Paris...something knowing.

I know I'm late to the party but thought I would post this anyway.

You can't multiply things in real life.

267 pieces of wood time anything is ridiculous.

A previous poster correctly pointed out that multiplication is just addition.

And we understand addition in real life.

If you have one apple and then you add another apple you have two apples.

So lets approach it as addition.

If I have 267 pieces of wood and I add nothing I get 267 pieces of wood.

But that isn't what you asked, the previous can be represented as 267 + 0 = 267.

However 267 * 0 means 0 when you translate it to addition.

For example

3 * 3 translates to 0 + 3 + 3 + 3

3 * 2 translates to 0 + 3 + 3

3 * 1 translates to 0 + 3

3 * 0 translates to 0

In fact anything * 0 translates to 0 because when you multiply by 0 you are not adding anything to anything, there is no addition.

Now trying to represent that in real life may cause your shower to turn you into a prune. I like the black hole reprentation. I dropped my 267 pieces of wood in there and now I have none.

A more interesting representation of multiplication in real life is area.

If you have a 3 rows x 2 columns of tile, you have 6 tiles.

If you have 267 rows x 0 columns of tile, you have no tiles.

However this model fails much beyond 4 things multiplied together as you run out of real world dimensions.
