Is There Anyway To Connect An Led To A Sata Hd?

Recommended Posts

I have 2 hard drive activity lights on the front of my case and I have 2 SATA hard drives (74GB Raptor/250GB WD Caviar). Can you hook up the LED light to a jumper on the back of the hard drive?

On my mobo I only have 1 IEDE hd activity jumper. Will it work with SATA drives?

Thanx

On page 46 of the pdf it shows the SATA connector pin out. P11 is the reserved/LED pin. First disconnector you drive and use and ohm-meter between a machined surface on the drive and that pin P11. Make sure it is not 0 ohms (P11 tied to ground). If it is <100 ohms, don't attempt this.

Then what you can try is connect an LED and a resistor ~500ohms in series. It doesn't matter what side you put the resistor one. Connect the anode side of the diode to +5V and the cathode side to P11 on the drive's SATA connector.

This may not work, but there's a good chance that the raptor does use that pin as an open drain LED driver.

Does the mobo have SATA LED support according to you mobo manual?

No. You would think it would considering it has 4 SATA connectors and a crap load of RAID functions.
