Harddrive + Clicksound = Dead? Revievable?

Recommended Posts

My deskstar 40gig just died overnight. It makes a clicking noise and my attempt to run Drive Fitness Test stalls at the drive scan. I suppose the obvious conclusion that it is dead. However, is it possibble to retrieve or even revive the drive? Thanks.

Clicking sound ususally means the drive is toast and the drive and heads inside are worthless. :(

A data recovery company such as OnTrack may be able to do the recovery, but expect four-digit prices for data recovery.

I got mine to work after a reboot and it would work perfectly fine, after another reboot it just clicked and clicked and was dead. If it makes you feel better my 180gxp and new hitachi drives, 6 in all are all fine, while my only 75gxp failed.

mine went the same way - after a fair bit of research and attempts at all kinds of repairs (freezing, dropping, holy water, etc) there was no hope.

You should try it anyways in the case you might be lucky but most clicks on the IBM just meant it was dead!

Sorry
