Device Under Test

A "must-read".....

The main problem with nuclear reactors seems to be the waste they produce.  If not for that I'd be 100% in favor.

The real problem is with nuclear waste, is everyone says not in my backyard for waste long term desposal sites.

Your backyard could be the distance between London and Moscow. The distance doesn't really matter. Why? We have some screeming lunatics that know nothing about the topic insisting they are educated.

Deep protected longterm storage is reasonable safe. You want to store the stuff in a very dry desert and store it very deap in the ground.

You might say we will not be around in 10k years to monitor it, but if we are not still around we probably already spread the stuff all over the surface of the planet.

True, the wasted rests are put in barrels and dumped into the sea. After a few years you eventually get leaks, but who cares.

 Or they could just hide the barrels in a big Oak or Seqouia tree, as Mr. Smithers and Mr. Burns did in The Simpsons. This was their second method, the other yielded the infamous three-eyed fishes.

Let's see, the waste is mixed in glass and then encased in more clean glass. Then the marbles are put in barrels.

Even if it were dropped in the ocean, it probably wouldn't spread any farther than the barrel.

If probably would be safe to drop these carefully into a subduction zone. If you get it placed correctly, it would be going into the mantle. That said, I'll let you be the person responsible for doing this.

The way you safely design long term storage containers is assume they will be placed where you don't want them. The ocean is probably a good test evironment to check your containers.

The only people suggesting dumping it in ocean are antinuclear fanatics. They suggest that pro-nuclear power groups want to do this.

If you want to present a good arguement against this, you will need to try again. ;)

I dont think blasting nuclear waste to the moon, earth orbit, is praticle with current technology... If we get rid of rockets, and use giant artillery or meglev sling shots, to fire the barrels of waste into inter-planetary space, that would be far safer...

nuclear waste will not be problem in future. scientist in ITER project are trying to "burn" this radioactive waste from nuclear plants and transform it to harmless helium via next nuclear reaction....of course, extra energy is only secondary benefit here B)

they say, that it will be possible in next 30 years ;)

"Harmless" eh? Start creating nearly anything in mass quantities and releasing it into the atmosphere, and there are bound to be some negative affects.
